Company Mission:
The American Red Cross Biomedical Services will fulfill the needs of the American people for the safest, most reliable, most cost-effective blood, plasma and tissue services through voluntary donations.
Who We Are
The Midwest Region Blood Services was founded over 50 years ago by Dr. R. Russell Best. He envisioned a community blood program that would serve people in times of peace. Dr. Best opened the American Red Cross Blood Bank in Omaha, with the assistance of the Chapter Executive Raymond H. Saylor. It took months of lobbying and meetings with community and medical leadership. The doors of the Omaha Red Cross Blood Center, as it was first known, opened on February 18, 1948. Initial staff consisted of a part-time medical director, a full-time volunteer who headed up the blood donor recruitment program, a nursing director, and a few paid staff. In that first year, the Center collected 8,047 units of blood with an annual operating budget of $47,000. Hospitals in Omaha and Council Bluffs were served by the blood bank.
Now, over 50 years later, the Midwest Region Blood Services, an affiliate of the American National Red Cross, collects blood and blood products from volunteer donors in 93 counties -- more than 62,000 square miles -- throughout much of Nebraska and portions of Iowa, Kansas and Colorado. We hold six to eight bloodmobiles each day throughout the region with a staff of over 300 to provide all of the blood components used at 92 hospitals in these states. Because we are part of a national Red Cross blood system, we also provide blood components to other parts of the country that are unable to meet their own blood needs.
